I am writing to inform you of a recent development that will effect The Tipsy Gypsies, and our upcoming performances.
I have been noticing something a bit odd when I sing, a feeling of discomfort that I initially attributed to allergies, but decided to have it assessed by a professional.
Unfortunately this professional informed me that I have the beginning stages of “nodules” on my vocal chords, and that in order for them to go away, I have to refrain from singing
or even talking too much for a while, and drink lots of tea (which I do already). I am to see her for a re-assessment in two months time.
The good news: I caught this early and it can be treated without surgical intervention!
The bad news: Upcoming Tipsy Gypsy performances will be canceled or delayed, as will our new album.
Despite this bad news, we are still extremely excited for our upcoming album, and I assure you it WILL happen. It just may take a bit longer than planned.
So before you retract your generous donations from our kick-starter extravaganza, just think of how exciting the anticipation of having to wait just a liiiiittle bit longer will be,
and then make another donation.
We truly appreciate your ongoing support and patience through our sabbatical and I promise you we will come back stronger and awesomer than ever.
I will be sure to keep you posted as we get closer to lift off with our recording project, and feel free to email me with comments, concerns or questions you may have.

Gypsy Jazz every Thursday night in SLO

If you’re in town on a thursday night, come down to Creekside Brewery from 10pm to midnight.
Every thursday night is (most of the Tipsy Gypsies) playing gypsy jazz. You never know who’s gonna be there. Last time Hilary sang some songs. Before that Molly from the Red Skunk came and sang some songs. It’s always good times.

Come down and enjoy the musique!

The place was packed. The wine was flowing. Everyone dressed up and made for a good cocktail party vibe and we provided the sounds. The Red Skunk Gypsy Swing Group opened the show and warmed up the crowd. By the time we got up the place was hoppin. Good times were had.

Just another wednesday night with a bus full of gypsies:

The bus took us by surprise. At first glance we assumed, correctly, that it was full of marvel and mischief. A large fellow with jewish locks, a fedora, glasses and 2 inch ear plugs hung back in the shadows as we approached.

“You guys musicians?” I asked,
“Yeah”
“What kind of music do you play?”
His compadre, juxtaposed with a relaxed and non-menacing demeanor, replied,
“We play, kind of, Balkan Gypsy and Klezmer music.”
It was that moment that we knew it would be a long night.

The group is called Revel Me from Portland, Oregon, and they are a bunch of great people, great musicians and great dancers.

The entire posse came to our house for an all night whiskey and music session. They were weary from their travels and were as excited to find us as we were to find them. The leader, Jorge, brought out his violin and mustache. Doug had an Oud, Djembe and wisdom. The whirlwind of talent known as Gus had his Accordian. Multi-instrumentalist Russel was in luck, for he didn’t have to lug his upright bass out of the bus. We had one of those and two gypsy guitars. Danielle and Bevin, for a lack of room to show their expert dance moves, brought their beautiful selves for the hang.

We played and played and played. Everyone in the group is seriously talented on multiple instruments. Music is in their blood, and it flows out of their veins effortlessly, bleeding all over the apartment. I played guitar and upright, uke, and Doug even let me check out his Oud. Tasha was on her game, and her bass had never sounded better. The sounds coming out of the living room were energetic and comforting all at once.

Gus pointed out that out of all the people they could have run into, he ran into some gypsy jazz musicians with a place to play, food, whiskey and a couch to sleep on. What are the odds?

He also has a musician theory that goes like this: You are only as good as you can play drunk. We put that theory to the test.

It was a rough morning.
